I went back to school with the mind-set of making polluters pay-up or clean up their messes. Water was the obvious choice to study, since it appears that most pollutants end up in our groundwater or surface waters and can often be traced back to their origins. Now that I have finally graduated with all of this additional knowledge to compliment my other abilities, I find myself at a bit of a loss for direction. There is so much work to do that I am not sure where to begin, perhaps some of you reading this understand.
I have considered the Peace Corps for a variety of reasons, but leaving my country at this critical juncture is something I cannot bring myself to do until after the elections. I would like to stay in Montana or the Northwest, especially Yellowstone National Park. The National Parks Systems, the BLM, USGS, the EPA, the MT-DEQ and Non-Profits could all make use of my talents; although I lean towards entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small business that do something positive for our environment.
I believe recycling is one of the many ways that we as a nation can improve our economy. Recycling will reduce landfill volumes, create jobs, build an industry and raise the consciousness of the nation about the values of recycling; while at the same time reducing energy consumption. This is a direction that most communities want to go, but either do not have the leadership and guidance and/or the funds to do so. That is where I believe the states and the federal government must take an aggressive lead role in attacking this growing problem.
Waste depositories, open landfills and mine wastes can all find their ways into our drinking water supplies; therefore we must do something about it. I am suggesting we go after the low hanging fruit first by intercepting the recyclable materials and reprocessing them in this country, thereby keeping them out of the landfills. Jobs are created, industries are localized, materials that can be reused many times are utilized instead of land filled, citizens are educated and the community benefits. There is no downside; only a lack of political will at every level of government to plan, explain to the public, find the financing and then implement programs.

EXPERIENCE
Recycling Intern for the University of Montana working in the Facility Services Department.
Analyzing all the available Recycling Departments data from its inception in 1991 through 2006 provided a baseline from which to develop a plan of action. The next phase involved physically working in the various recycling tasks to gain the perspective that was needed to identify areas in need of improvement. Reports followed, providing ways to improve various aspects of the university recycling program, that now include electronics waste and fluorescent bulb disposal. The university will save $25,000-$30,000 a year by implementing my recommendations.
